Quiet Connections is a community interest company that supports people who are quieter, more introverted, or who find social situations overwhelming. I chose to volunteer with them because their mission resonates with me personally. As someone who is quieter and introverted myself, I know how much it means to have spaces where you feel welcome without having to be someone you're not.

I was part of the volunteer team that helped re-start the Helston Meet-Up, working alongside others to get it going again as a welcoming, low-pressure space for people to connect. After getting that going, I moved across to help with the Truro Meet-Up, continuing that same work in a new community.

Alongside the meet-ups, I look after the day-to-day maintenance of the Quiet Connections website and helped set up an online community forum, giving members a place to connect between meet-ups too.

2015 – Present

Helstonbury is a much-loved independent music festival held in Helston, Cornwall, bringing together local and regional musicians across multiple stages in a real community celebration of live music.

My connection with Helstonbury started long before I picked up a camera. I originally attended as a performer, playing on stage with a band. Over time I got into photography, and that passion grew into taking on the role of resident photographer, something I have now been doing for over ten years.

In recent years my involvement has grown beyond photography. I have helped with merchandise, managed card machines on the day, and in August 2025 I held a photography exhibition at the festival, displaying ten years of my work from across the event's history.

2019 – 2022

A three-year undergraduate degree exploring photography through the lens of the natural world, with a particular focus on marine environments and wildlife. The course combined practical photographic skills with a strong academic grounding in conservation, ecology, and the ethics of nature photography. It pushed me to work in challenging outdoor conditions, develop a thoughtful visual style, and tell meaningful stories through imagery. Studying at the Penryn Campus in Cornwall, right on the doorstep of some of the UK's most spectacular coastline, made it a genuinely immersive experience.

Mar 2023 – Jun 2024

A varied, hands-on role covering all areas of the store. Day to day I worked on the shop floor keeping things stocked and tidy, served customers on the tills, assisted at the Post Office counter, and helped out in the bakery. It was a role that kept me busy, and I enjoyed the variety and the regular contact with the local community.
